Recognising the A shape
Shoulders narrower than the hips, a clearly drawn waist.
- The marker
- Your hips are broader than your shoulders, and your waist draws itself clearly.
- The top
- The shoulders are fine.
- In front of the mirror
- A fitted jacket suits you without alteration, while straight skirts pull.
The proportions
Shoulders narrower than the hips, a marked waist.
A body shape is not read in a mirror in thirty seconds, and it does not have to be exact: it is a starting point, to know what to try on first. If you hesitate between two, in three questions.
The cuts that suit you
All silhouettesDraw the eye back up to the shoulders. Here is why these lines work, and what they actually do once the dress is on.

01
Ball gown
Everything happens on the bodice: embroidery, draping, neckline. The fullness of the skirt asks for nothing — it answers the hips without touching them.
- Santana — Ball gown with basque waist in organza and tulle, floral lace
- Guinevere — Strapless ball gown in jacquard, pointed basque corset

02
A-line
The skirt opens from the waist and follows the hips instead of tracing them. It is the easiest cut to wear for a whole day.

Ask yours- How do I know if I have the A shape?
- Your hips are broader than your shoulders, and your waist draws itself clearly. The shoulders are fine. A fitted jacket suits you without alteration, while straight skirts pull.
- Which wedding dress suits an A shape best?
- The ones that give the upper body something to hold the eye: an embroidered or draped bodice, or a neckline that widens the shoulders. The skirt has nothing to prove — flared, it answers the hips without underlining them.
- How do I balance hips that are broader than my shoulders?
- From above, never by covering below. A boat neckline or a straight bodice add a few centimetres of line at the shoulders, and that is enough to change the whole proportion.
- Does a mermaid dress suit an A shape?
- It wears very well, provided the top has something to balance it: a sleeve, a wide strap, a worked neckline. Many A-shape brides leave with a mermaid they had not planned to try on.
Beyond the body shape
A body shape says where to begin. It does not say who you are on the day of your wedding.
- The style
- A dress is also chosen against one’s type. An 8 shape may want something fluid, and be quite right.
- The place
- A two-metre train on a beach, heavy satin in August: the dress has to last the day, not only the photograph.
- Comfort
- You will wear it for twelve hours. If you can neither sit down nor raise your arms, no cut will make up for that.
- Feeling
- It is the only criterion that really decides. In the fitting room, brides know within thirty seconds — long before they have looked at the cut.
