Wedding dress, mermaid recommended for the 8 shape — MADAMOON showroom, Paris 10e

Recognising the 8 shape

Shoulders and hips in balance, a marked waist.

The marker
Shoulders and hips answer each other, and the waist hollows clearly between the two.
The curves
They are marked, and even from top to bottom.
In front of the mirror
Fitted clothes flatter you, it is the straight cuts that float.

The proportions

Shoulders and hips in line, a hollowed waist, marked curves.

A body shape is not read in a mirror in thirty seconds, and it does not have to be exact: it is a starting point, to know what to try on first. If you hesitate between two, in three questions.

The cuts that suit you

All silhouettes

Bring out a harmony that is already there. Here is why these lines work, and what they actually do once the dress is on.

01

Mermaid

It follows a line that is already proportioned. Fitted through the thigh, it corrects nothing: it follows.

03

A-line

It starts at the waist — already the narrowest point — and opens from there. There is nothing to draw: the dress follows a line that exists.

Ball gown

The bodice nips in at the waist and the fullness starts from there. The contrast is clear, and that is the whole effect.

The questions we are asked

Ask yours
How do I know if I have the 8 shape?
Shoulders and hips answer each other, and the waist hollows clearly between the two. They are marked, and even from top to bottom. Fitted clothes flatter you, it is the straight cuts that float.
Which wedding dress for a marked waist and curves?
Mermaids and sheaths, which follow a line already in proportion without having to create it. Unadorned satin works for the same reason: it tells only the cut.
Does a ball gown suit an 8 shape?
Yes. The bodice nips in at the waist and the fullness starts from there: the contrast is clear, and that is the whole effect. It simply asks for room — think of the place and of the day.
Should I avoid straight cuts with an 8 shape?
No. A straight cut sometimes floats where the waist hollows, but a belt or a seam taken in at the waist settles the question in one fitting. Nothing is ruled out in advance.

Beyond the body shape

A body shape says where to begin. It does not say who you are on the day of your wedding.

The style
A dress is also chosen against one’s type. An 8 shape may want something fluid, and be quite right.
The place
A two-metre train on a beach, heavy satin in August: the dress has to last the day, not only the photograph.
Comfort
You will wear it for twelve hours. If you can neither sit down nor raise your arms, no cut will make up for that.
Feeling
It is the only criterion that really decides. In the fitting room, brides know within thirty seconds — long before they have looked at the cut.
